Despite previously being invited to the Team USA training camp being held in August, Anthony Davis has removed himself from the camp and the ensuing FIBA World Cup, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. The decision was confirmed by his agent, Rich Paul.
According to Haynes, Davis is still committed to Team USA for the 2020 Olympics despite not participating in the upcoming international event.
Davis joins LeBron James as Los Angeles Lakers stars who will not partake in Team USA activities this offseason. Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma will be at the training camp with the chance to play his way onto the world cup roster.
Since being introduced by the Lakers, Davis has been adamant that his focus is on winning a championship this season. That has been his answer to every question about free agency and his excitement level to play in LA. The latest decision only provides further evidence that the former New Orleans Pelicans star is serious about taking the Lakers towards their 17th NBA championship.
Lakers fans may be disappointed that they will have to wait longer to see their newest star big man in action. On the other hand, Davis will get a full summer to train and practice with his new teammates with a lower risk of injury, giving the team a kickstart to start their season with title aspirations.
