One of the enticing scenarios about having Magic Johnson as the president of basketball operations is the appeal and respect he will illuminate during free agency. According to Boston Celtics’ Isaiah Thomas, he believes that Magic will attract superstar free agents in the future for the Lakers.
In the morning’s shootaround for the game against the Lakers, Thomas said that ” some superstar is going to come here.” Thomas, who is a known Laker fan growing up, loves the hiring of Magic Johnson,
“It’s good. Magic Johnson is arguably the best Laker ever, so to have him the head of all that and making decisions, it’s a step in the right direction. Everybody respects him. I mean, the Lakers are not going to be, I guess, what they are now forever. He’ll bring some people here.”
There is no hiding that the Lakers have failed to attract any superstars during free agency. Their questionable signings of Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng reemphasized how difficult it was for the Lakers have any quality free agent signings. Deng and Mozgov are currently falling out of the Lakers’ rotation.
The next few years will be an important test for the Magic Johnson and the Lakers. Paul George, who has been linked with the Lakers, will be a free agent in 2018. DeMarcus Cousins, who the Lakers tried to trade for last month, will also be a free agent in 2018.
Laker fans will have to wait and see if Magic can indeed bring in superstar talents to help the Lakers succeed again.
