Magic Johnson wants Kobe Bryant in Lakers front office

The first few weeks of the relationship between Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers has been a whirlwind, to say the least.

Starting with his hire, Magic has said he wants to call the shots, stepped back from his claim to call the shots and dropped the nugget that Jeanie Buss said she wants to make changes.

In his latest sound bit, Magic appeared on First Take on ESPN on Tuesday and dropped another tidbit of information.

“First call I make if I’m in charge? Kobe Bryant,” Johnson said on ESPN’s First Take. “Because Kobe understands winning. He understands, also, these players. I would call: ‘What role you want? … If you’ve got a day, just give me that day.’

“I’ll take that. Whatever time he has, I want him to come and be a part of it.”

For what it’s worth, all indications from Kobe Bryant since his retirement has indicated he has no interest in being a public figure for the Lakers.

However, a call from Magic to come in and help the team in any capacity possible could be a bit too enticing to turn down.

That being said, in the end, I’m not so sure Bryant would be anxious to join a Laker front office, especially if it comes after the likely dumping of Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak.

What is certain is that, at his current rate of one sound bite per day, Magic Johnson will continue to dominate the Lakers news circuit.
