The Los Angeles Lakers acquisition of Marc Gasol has led to much excitement about what the veteran center can add to the team. But it’s also come with much nostalgia over his brother Pau who won two championships alongside Kobe Bryant at the start of the last decade.
Fans have started to clamor for the Lakers signing their former star as he nears the end of his career and giving him an opportunity to potentially win another ring in purple and gold. The younger Gasol didn’t exactly dispel that desire in his first interview as a Laker with Allie Clifton of Spectrum SportsNet (transcribed by Christian Rivas of Silver Screen and Roll):
“I’m not a very social media guy, but I know Pau loves L.A. and loves the Lakers. Obviously, he feels like it’s home, so I’m sure that he would love to come back, but that’s a question for Rob and ownership.”
That might not exactly be news. Pau’s said before that he’s open to a reunion in Los Angeles and with his younger brother now expected to start for the team, it makes some sense for the time to be now.
That said, we probably shouldn’t get our hopes up. The Lakers are still building a championship roster and Pau is coming off an injury-riddled season where he didn’t play at all. The previous year, he played in only 30 games. If you’re thinking to yourself “Who cares? It’s Pau,” I agree! But we shouldn’t be surprised if Rob Pelinka and company don’t sign the 40-year-old as one of their final depth pieces.
I would love to see Pau come backbut, I have n o knowledge of his injuries and the fact that he is 40 yrs old, but
then there is lebron shattering all records.
