As the NBA continues to be in a state of flux regarding whether or not it will resume the 2019-20 season following its suspension due to coronavirus, some teams are considering this time as good as ever to look forward to 2020-21. That includes strategizing for the upcoming 2020 NBA Draft, the free agency period, as well as replacing some head coaches that are already fired, or will be relieved of their duties eventually. Any head coaching positions may end up being linked to members of the Lakers staff due to their success in propelling the Lakers to the number one seed in the Western Conference, with the Brooklyn Nets’ position being no exception. It has been reported by Marc Stein of The New York Times that Lakers assistant Jason Kidd is on the Nets’ list of coaching candidates, along with ESPN/ABC commentators Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy, as well as Clippers asssistant Tyronn Lue who was almost awarded the Lakers head coaching position before it was given to Frank Vogel. The Nets are on the search for a head coach after the team and Kenny Atkinson decided to mutually part ways in early March.

Jason Kidd actually had a small interview for the Lakers’ head coaching position while they were interviewing Vogel and other candidates following the fallout of discussions between Tyronn Lue and the franchise. He ended up taking the top assistant position underneath Vogel, leading many people to make jokes about Kidd possibly stabbing Vogel in the back and taking his job if the Lakers were to get off to a bad start to the season. Kidd has been criticized in the past for circumventing the head coaches he serves. Luckily, the Lakers did not get off to a rough start, as they’ve basically been first in the Western Conference all season.
Unluckily, the NBA is still not around as the world continues to respond to the coronavirus pandemic. We’ll see if we hear more about the Nets’ job search as time goes on, as we’ve maybe seen the last of Jason Kidd on the Lakers’ bench.
