The Los Angeles Lakers would prefer to use their cap space on a max level player, but it seems they are doing due diligence on other options. The thinking is to split up the cap space into multiple role players instead of just one star. According to Brad Turner of the LA Times, the Lakers have reached out to the representatives of Patrick Beverley.
Sources: The Lakers have reached out to the reps of free agent guard Patrick Beverley. Beverley is one of the best defenders in the NBA and his 3-point shooting has improved dramatically. He’s also a great locker room presence.

Beverly played last season with the crosstown rival Los Angeles Clippers. WIth a lot of teams having cap space, there will no doubt be competiton for his services. Beverely would be a perfect compliment though to Anthony Davis and LeBron James, filling key needs in both shooting and defense. Beverly shot 39.7 percent from three in 78 games a season ago, helping his team to make the playoffs.
It has also been reported that the Lakers have reached out to D’Angelo Russell, and those two could be a nice backcourt going forward. The team is currently only made up of four players, so how they fill out the roster will be crucial. With Kyrie Irving reportedly signing with the Brooklyn Nets, The Lakers most likely will be waiting on Kawhi Leonards decision. You never want to put all eggs into one basket, so guys like Patrick Beverley are a good backup plan.
