In a damning piece from The Athletic’s Bill Oram discussed how even with LeBron James, the Lakers faced a similar fate. It will be the 6th year in a row that the Lakers will be without a playoff berth. Come July 1st when free agency begins, the Lakers will make another attempt of building a roster in hopes of making the playoffs.

Since July of 2018, the Lakers should have an idea of how to approach it after the discourse of this season. The front office made the signings without any consideration for the coaching staff. The coaching staff noted their desires, but it seemed that Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka had other ideas.

per Bill Oram:

The Lakers then renounced the rights to restricted free agent Julius Randle-much to the chagrin of the coaches who hoped to retain both Randle and Brook Lopez- in order to sign veteran point guard Rajon Rondo. Then Michael Beasley. It was immediately seen as a combustible grouping.

It’s public knowledge that the coaches wanted to bring Randle and Lopez back. The fact that the coaches and front office have no communication is a sign of how dysfunctional the entire situation in Los Angeles is (heh).

With no word about who will be the head coach of the Lakers, it will be important for the coaching staff and the front office to be on the same page. Luke Walton is still the head coach and whether he stays, the Lakers need to handle their internal matters more professionally.
