Kyrie Irving has had a tumultuous relationship with his current team the Boston Celtics, including a public outburst calling out his teammates.

However, it appears Irving is not likely to leave the Lakers biggest rivals to join his former teammate LeBron James, with sources going as far to say that possibility is “a joke.”

With new rumors swirling about point guard Kyrie Irving’s future in Boston, a league source with ties to the All-Star point guard said Irving has given no indication that he will back down from his October proclamation that he will re-sign with the Celtics at season’s end.

The source added that Irving could change his mind before July 1, but added that if he does, it almost certainly would not be to reunite with LeBron James, calling that notion “a joke.”

Kyrie Irving would have been an awesome addition to the Lakers team, under any team construct, but it appears that the former number one pick is not going to leave Boston, and joining the Lakers is a longshot.

LeBron James, Anthony Davis (if a trade was made) and Kyrie Irving would be a team good enough to challenge the Warriors under their current construct, and with Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson both on expiring deals, it could have been the new best team in the league.

There are other possibilities for the Lakers to pursue, and I’m sure that they will assemble the best team they can under the circumstances.
