Since being drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, Kyle Kuzma has been very upfront about his family and upbringing in Flint, Michigan. That hasn’t changed as the young forward has become a crucial part of the most storied franchise in the NBA.

Most recently, Kuzma and his mother Karri were the stars of a video for The Players’ Tribune as part of a series titled “Journey of Unexpected Heroes.” The subject of the segment is Karri’s upbringing of Kyle and his siblings as a single parent in one of the most violent cities in the United States.

Fame and fortune often make fans of sports forget about where players came from. The Lakers have several players who were born in poverty in single-parent households and had to claw their way out with basketball sometimes being their only option.

Kuzma has not been shy about discussing that reality and he has been doing his part to make life better for kids with similar problems now. He has used his platform to keep educating the masses about the Flint water crisis and has continued to put his money to good use in those neighborhoods.

Karri, who has been an active member of Lakers Twitter, is cheering her son on the entire way.
