Isaiah Thomas was only in the Lakers locker room for three months after a mid-season trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Nevertheless, the point guard seems to have enjoyed his time in Los Angeles even though he was not brought back in free agency.
Now a member of the Denver Nuggets, Thomas appeared on CBS Sports Radio and spoke about his time with the Lakers. After calling Lonzo Ball a player with the potential to be “special,” IT had praise for a couple other members of the purple and gold.
First, the former MVP candidate spoke about Kyle Kuzma, who he seemed to build a relationship with almost immediately after the trade:
“Kyle Kuzma is a very underrated guy. The doubt that everybody has for his game (is) motivation. As somebody who works very hard, he’s going to be another special young talent in this league.”
Kuzma had a surprising and special rookie season but Thomas doesn’t believe the combo forward will leave it at that.
Thomas also had praise for head coach Luke Walton who has been questioned as the right person to lead the Lakers in the LeBron James era. But Thomas put that talk to bed:
“My time with the Lakers was very well (sic). Luke Walton was a very good coach. He let me be able to showcase my skills and I think it’s going to be a special group over there especially with LeBron James coming to town.”
Walton will have a difficult job ahead of him with more expectations than he’s had since agreeing to coach the Lakers. But the team has stuck by him in the past and it seems like he will have a relatively long leash to work things out with his new roster.
