The Los Angeles Lakers rebuild is over. The team landed the biggest free agent on the market this summer and added arguably the greatest star they’ve ever signed in LeBron James. Once the superstar announced he was joining the Lakers, the expectations and excitement around this team raised instantly, expectations and excitement that young players like Kyle Kuzma helped instill in this Lakers team.
After hearing of James’ decision, Kuzma opted to give his new teammate a call and welcome him to the franchise. According to Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times, Kuzma spoke to reporters in Las Vegas where he was supporting the Lakers Summer League team and described the conversation briefly.
“It was very short; he was headed out of the country,” Kuzma said of the conversation. “It’s a bunch of excitement. Getting one of the greatest players of all time. Not too many players can say that.”
Other players like Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart reacted on Twitter following the announcement from James.
Kuzma also sent out a tweet about James but it seems that he was the first player that we know of to speak to James about becoming a Laker.
James spoke to Magic Johnson the night free agency started and went into detail about impressed he was with the young core the team has in place. Barring a blockbuster trade, the young core, including Kuzma will have to collectively play second fiddle to LeBron on the court and if it’s any indication by how they reacted to the signing, they’re excited about the challenge.
