With Thursday’s NBA trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Los Angeles Lakers sent shockwaves around the league on Tuesday before even making a deal.
The team announced that they relieved general manager Mitch Kupchak and vice president of basketball operations Jim Buss of their duties, effective immediately. Magic Johnson is now the president of basketball operations and the team hired Rob Pelinka as their new GM. Pelinka was Kobe Bryant’s agent, among various other NBA players that includes James Harden of the Houston Rockets.
Johnson and Pelinka already have one transaction under their belt as they begin the new regime in Laker land. They traded Lou Williams to the Rockets in exchange for Corey Brewer and their first-round pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, currently slotted at No. 27 overall.
