The Lakers looked to bounce back after a couple losses in a row at home against Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder. This game was a rematch of the team’s third game of the season which they lost on the road 113-96.

For the purple and gold it was a complete team effort as they had six players in double figures. They were without D’Angelo Russell (sore knee) and Julius Randle was playing with a hip injury.

This was a game in which the Lakers really played well from the opening tip; they had multiple double-digit leads throughout the game. Unfortunately, they saw their lead evaporate as they went scoreless for the last three minutes of the game until Nick Young’s three-pointer with five seconds to go. The team was able to stop a Westbrook jumpshot and hold on for a 111-109 victory.

The Lakers have a ton of contributors

This team is full of players who can impact the game in a number of ways, and they’re showing that under Luke Walton.

That’s especially true offensively as all but two of the players who played tonight scored 8+ points. We all are aware of the success of the bench, which continued tonight, but we also got to see a big game out of Timofey Mozgod as well with 16 points and two blocks.

Nick Young should be a serious MIP candidate

How awesome has this guy been? He went from virtually out of the league to now starting and playing exceptional basketball while being a huge contribution to the team’s surprising 8-7 start.

He was able to bolster his resume tonight with another superb game, pouring in 17 points (6-12, 4-7 from 3) and hitting the go ahead three-pointer off a pass that wasn’t intended for him. Nothing could be more Swaggy.

If the team continues its success, he will have to be a contender for the Most Improved Player award.

Team still needs to limit turnovers

Coming into tonight the Lakers ranked 25th in the league in turnovers averaging just over 16 a game, this game was no different. As a group they committed 17 turnovers, most of which game in the first half and allowed the Thunder to creep back into the contest.

Under a new system with a majority of its contributors being relatively inexperienced it is understandable for a team to be sloppy with the ball. But it would help immensely if they could cut the turnovers down.

The team ranks in the top five in shooting and top six in scoring across the league, and if they’re able to bring the turnover numbers down those numbers will be even higher.

Pretty good point here: the team has held leads, given them away on big runs, but finds ways to compete night in and night out.
