The Los Angeles Lakers are firmly placed in the draft process now as more and more news comes out about workouts they will hold for several players. The team has already scheduled workouts with Marquette big-man Henry Ellenson and probable second overall pick and future Laker Brandon Ingram.
But beyond players who will be drafted in the first round, LA will also be working out less heralded players who they could pick up with the 32nd overall pick or even as an undrafted free agent.
The first such name, according to Basketball Insiders’ Alex Kennedy (and brought to our attention by Harrison Faigen of Silver Screen and Roll) is Isaiah Cousins. Kennedy reports that the former Oklahoma guard will be working out for LA on Wednesday.
DraftExpress currently has Cousins as its 65th best prospect, meaning he will likely go undrafted on June 23rd. Depending on his workout, the 22-year-old could be a target for the Lakers to add to their Summer League roster where he would have a chance to prove he can take a roster spot on the final squad.
Playing alongside heralded senior Buddy Hield, Cousins showcased an elite ability of shooting the ball, hitting 41% of his shots beyond the arc with over four attempts per game. Outside of shooting, he is not elite or very promising at any other skill. However, with the Lakers having a need for shooters, it would not be too shocking to ultimately see Cousins with a roster spot.
That said, he has an uphill road to climb and that starts with his upcoming workout. If he impresses, he may see himself in a Lakers uniform in July.
