In the least shocking news of what has been an eventful offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers announced on Thursday that they are waiving point guard Tyler Ennis.
Ennis’ contract was set to be guaranteed on July 5th. By cutting him before that date, the Lakers will save over $1.6 million in cap space.
Ennis spent one and a half seasons in Los Angeles after being traded at the deadline last year. Despite some promising moments, the 23-year-old was largely irrelevant to the future of the Lakers.
Last season, Ennis averaged 4.1 points and 1.9 assist per game in 12.6 minutes per contest. He shot 42 percent from the field and 25 percent from behind the arc.
The Lakers now have under 38 million dollars committed to active salaries next season. LAL have two more non-guaranteed contracts on the roster in Ivica Zubac and Thomas Bryant. Their contracts could also be waived in an effort to create the maximum cap space required for the Lakers offseason plans.
As it stands, Alex Caruso will remain the likely backup to Lonzo Ball at the point guard position. The Lakers also have several rookies who could contend to take Ennis’ spot in that role off the bench before free agent additions are made.
