Report: Lakers hire NBA Director of Analytics Jason Rosenfeld

The Los Angeles Lakers are continuing to bolster their front office. Days after hiring Antawn Jamison as part of the scouting department, LAL is adding a new face to its analytics department.

According to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, the Lakers are hiring Jason Rosenfeld as their Director of Analytics. He previously held the same role for the NBA. Rosenfeld has worked for the league office for the past three years.

Rosenfeld also has experience as an intern with the Houston Rockets and held the same analytics role for the Charlotte Hornets. From 2009 to 2010, Rosenfeld was the assistant general manager of the Shanghai Sharks in China.

The Lakers have been criticized for their analytics department, or lack thereof, for years. The new management has spoken highly about needing a change and has overhauled that staff but until now there have not been any signature signings.

This could be a major step in allowing the Lakers to catch up to the rest of the NBA. Nearly every team has a robust analytics department at this point, giving statistics regarding their own players and opponents to the team, the coaches, and management in order to better run the organization.

Rosenfeld could be the start of the Lakers’ road to reaching that same stage.
