After signing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to a one-year deal, the Lakers still have roster space to sign at least two free agents to complete their team. Magic Johnson has reiterated that the team is prioritizing signing a veteran point guard to back up and mentor Lonzo Ball.
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, the Lakers are scheduled to meet with free agent point guard Derrick Rose.

Rose, the former NBA Most Valuable Player in 2011 for the Chicago Bulls, had struggled in the recent years due to significant injuries and off-court troubles.
Earlier on Thursday, it was reported by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst that the Cavaliers were in serious talks with Rose on a one-year deal, but Rose will still reportedly meet with the Lakers.

Rose last played for the New York Knicks where he averaged 18.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 32 minutes per game. Rose shot a respectable 47 percent from the field, his highest mark since the 2009-10 season. However, Rose still a career low from deep at 21 percent.
Rose’s fit with the Lakers is a little concerning and comes with a territory. He was never a good shooter or a playmaker, and his off-court issues may raise questions on his mentorship role. However, the Lakers might just be doing their due diligence and making sure to look at all the options available.
