The Lakers have been eerily quiet so far in this year’s free agency. That is to no one’s surprise, though; Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka stated many times this summer that the Lakers were only looking to add players to a one-year contract. Their goal is to focus and spend big in the summer of 2018.

In an interview with ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Magic believes that the Lakers’ young core could attract major free agents next summer:

“You got a good young core [of players], who all are great. I think Lonzo will help to make them guys better. It’s going to be a fun team to watch. I think Laker fans will be happy.”

Magic trusts that the young core led by Lonzo Ball will be enough to bring in top players come next year:

“I think what’s really important, is that now free agents will say, ‘They got enough firepower now.’ I think that’s the key. We’re talented enough that free agents will say, ‘They got it going now.'”

There is no doubt that the Lakers have talented young prospects, but their performance on the court next year will be a crucial aspect in the franchise bidding for star players.
