Update: Lonzo Ball has informed GM Danny Ainge he will not workout for Celtics ahead of 2017 NBA Draft

Lonzo Ball has told Celtics’ GM Danny Ainge that he will not be working out for the team.

This comes as no surprise as both Ball and his father have been very open about their desire to play for the Lakers who have the second overall pick in the NBA draft. This makes it all the more likely that Boston passes on Ball in favor of Markelle Fultz, which was already a likelihood. The question remaining would be whether or not the Lakers will draft the UCLA alum.

The Los Angeles Lakers, fortunately, kept their first-round pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, even moving up one spot to pick second overall. Before they make a decision on who they will draft (if they do indeed keep the pick), they will have to see who the Boston Celtics select with their first overall pick.

The player most linked to the Lakers in the pre-draft process has been Lonzo Ball. The former UCLA star and his outspoken father LaVar have made it no secret that they want to be drafted by the Lakers.

But action speaks louder than words and the Ball family might try to do everything in their power to avoid Boston.

Lonzo Ball will work out for the Lakers. That’s been clear from the start. But will he work out for the Celtics, who have the #1 pick? Or any other team in the lottery for that matter? Source close to the UCLA freshman says he’s undecided. “We will make that decision closer to June,” source says. Adding that it’s been “clear from the start our desired destination is Los Angeles.”

Ball not working out for the Celtics does not make it a given that they won’t draft him. But the noise surrounding him might be too much for a contending team and the prospect of drafting someone so adamant about being a Laker might be enough to turn them off of Lonzo. Plus, most believe Markelle Fultz is the better prospect in the draft.

We’re more than one month away from the draft and anything can still change but it sure seems likely that Lonzo Ball will be a Laker by July.
