The Los Angeles Lakers are finalizing a two-year deal with David Nwaba, according to The Vertical’s Shams Charania. Nwaba previously played for the team under two 10-day contracts.
The 24-year-old Nwaba was originally called up from the D-Fenders, having performed admirably for the Lakers’ D-League affiliate. In ten games with the Lakers, Nwaba has averaged 3.6 points and two rebounds per game.
But Nwaba’s impact goes far beyond the box score numbers. He has been the Lakers’ best perimeter defender – not a difficult bar to reach but a notable one nonetheless. His bursts of energy defensively as well as his ability to finish at the rim in transition has been a much-needed boost to a team which has often been close to completely checking out of the season.
Nwaba was clearly both a fan favorite and a team favorite in his early career with the Lakers. Both Luke Walton and D’Angelo Russell had publicly complimented the Cal Poly product and spoken about his high chances of sticking in the league.
It appears David Nwaba will now have the opportunity to officially put together an NBA career with a little financial security. But as he’s proven in his time with the Lakers, Nwaba is not looking to stop now that he’s reached some success.
