One of the most remarkable components of the Lakers’ early success is the performance of their bench. The Lakers have the top scoring second unit in the league at 50 points per game. Their offensive and defensive rating is just as impressive (ORtg:107.8, DRtg 88.9).
Since Luke Walton abandoned the need for a pure point guard in either Marcelo Huertas or Jose Calderon, the Lakers bench has been wreaking havoc against their opposition. The backcourt duo of Jordan Clarkson and Lou Williams have been tremendous. Their ability to play interchangeably in passing and scoring situations provide a huge scoring threat for the Lakers.
The athletic front court trio of Brandon Ingram, Larry Nance Jr, and Tarik Black allows the Lakers to switch effectively on defense and play a frenetically fast pace on offense. They set excellent screens to allow Clarkson and Williams to create freely on offense.
