WATCH: Timofey Mozgov is taking and making three-point shots

When the Lakers agreed to a four-year, $64 million dollar contract with Timofey Mozgov just minutes after the free agency period opened up on July 1, the team received plenty of criticism for it for various reasons.

For the Lakers to finally take steps forward again in terms of on-court production, they will need a big man that can help anchor a defense that has struggled mightily the past few seasons. Mozgov certainly has that skill in his arsenal, but he will need to erase the cloud of doubt stemming from his injury history, which could help justify his massive contract, at least to a certain extent.

Mozgov was likely brought on primarily for his defensive potential in Los Angeles, but the Lakers will obviously hope to get some efficient production from him on offense when the opportunities are presented.

Head coach Luke Walton wants to run a system similar to that of the Golden State Warriors, so look for the Lakers to try and space the floor with perimeter shooting threats. Apparently, Mozgov wants in on some of that action.

The Lakers have not been blessed with a three-point shooting center since the glory days of Andrew Bynum under former coach Mike Brown. Let the “Three-Mofey”, “Three-Mo” and “Timo-Trey” tweets commence.

Okay, all jokes aside, this is simply a video of Mozgov hitting shots with no defense present. On the surface, it is nice to see, because if he is on the floor with Julius Randle, the Lakers will need at least one to provide at least a little bit of floor spacing.

Mozgov is a 17.9 percent three-point shooter for his career, so maybe he should leave those to some of his teammates. But if the big man is able to consistently knock down shots from about 15 feet out, that will provide a tremendous luxury for the Lakers’ offense.

Training camp is mere weeks away now, but it still can’t get here soon enough.
