Training camp is right around the corner and the Lakers are in the midst of filling out their roster. The newest addition to the squad is Julian Jacobs. The team announced his signing (as well as that of Travis Wear, reported earlier) on Thursday. The Lakers now have 18 players on the roster.
Jacobs is an undrafted free agent out of USC. He played three seasons there before declaring for the draft. In that time, Jacobs averaged 11.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
At 22 years old, Jacobs is an older junior, which would explain his decision to declare for the draft early. The athletic point guard seems to be a jack-of-all-trades prospect, but he clearly has some flaws.
Jacobs is not a good shooter and he does not seem to be a very good playmaker as he is prone to turnovers without being an assist machine. Of course, college statistics can be deceptive due to the pace and talent level of the sport.
Jacobs will have an uphill battle to get a spot on the regular season roster. The Lakers currently have three point guards (D’Angelo Russell, Jose Calderon, Marcelo Huertas) and that’s not to mention that Jordan Clarkson could get some playing time running the point as well.
If the 6-4, 180 lb point guard Julian Jacobs impresses in training camp, however, he could find himself with the D-Fenders where LA will be able to monitor his progress.
