Report: Russell Westbrook nearing extension with Oklahoma City

Well the #WestbrookToLA talk may be coming to a grinding halt. The Oklahoma City Thunder and Russell Westbrook are closing in on a contract extension that would keep the All-Star point guard in OKC.

Adrian Wojnarowski of the Vertical reports that Westbrook and the Thunder are discussing a 3-year, $85 million-plus deal with a player option for 2018 and those talks have “significant momentum”.

Ramona Shelburne reported later that the Thunder have agreed in principle to the renegotiation and extension.

There have been countless reports that the Lakers were set to make a serious run at the California native next summer. That talk picked up once Kevin Durant made his staggering decision to leave OKC and join the Golden State Warriors. Westbrook was looked at as someone that the team must either trade this season or possibly lose for nothing when he hit free agency. With the prospects that the Lakers have, they were often the team linked to trade talks to acquire the five time All-Star if the Thunder could not agree to an extension.

This news means that the fans lobbying for a return home from Westbrook will have to wait at least a little longer. It also means Brandon Ingram, D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle, and Jordan Clarkson won’t have to worry about their names coming up in any short-sighted trade rumors for at least the time being. With that said, we might as well enjoy the rebuild.
