Report: Kevin Durant will not meet with the Lakers during free agency

After years of wishing, dreaming and hoping for Kevin Durant to wear a purple and gold jersey in Los Angeles, it seems that this fantasy has ended. According to Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports, Kevin Durant will likely not meet with the Lakers during free agency:

Despite years of speculation about Durant possibly signing with his hometown Washington Wizards or the Los Angeles Lakers, a person with knowledge of his situation told USA TODAY Sports that those two teams are not expected to land a meeting with the former MVP.

The teams that will be meeting Durant are the Thunder, Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, and Miami Heat according to Amick.

It is a little disappointing that the Lakers will not have the chance to meet with Durant, but this could be a blessing in disguise. The Lakers have sought out all-star free agents in the past few years and have struck out each time. Instead of focusing on signing affordable talent, the Lakers went after the big named commodities and lost.

The Lakers can move on to other free agents now that Durant will likely sign elsewhere. Instead of losing sleep over Durant’s decision, they can be aggressive and proactive in looking at other, more attainable free agents like Hassan Whiteside.

The dream for the Kevin Durant sweepstakes is over before it even began, but that’s okay. The Lakers can’t be dreaming anymore; it is time for them to be in tune with reality and move on to hopefully better opportunities.
